St. Vincent DePaul Society (Helping the Poor in our Community)
Offers the hospitality of Jesus by caring for the homeless and the hungry. September through June, members meet monthly at 10:30am on the first Monday of the month (excluding holidays).
Outreach efforts include emergency financial assistance with housing, fuel, medication and food. We also participate in Carroll County Food Sunday and the Loaves and Fishes Soup Kitchen. All services are funded almost entirely through Parish Poor Box donations. Volunteers meet person-to-person with the needy, five days a week, at their Office in the St. John Parish Center. St. Vincent de Paul Office hours are: Monday 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. & Tuesday-Friday 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
Angel Tree Christmas Outreach – The St. Vincent de Paul Office sponsors the Angel Tree Program during the Christmas holidays, to provide gifts for individuals and families in the community who would, otherwise, not have a “Christmas experience.” Parishioners may adopt a family or take a tag from the Giving Tree, which is placed in the narthex of the church the weekend after Thanksgiving. Tags have the client’s name and requests for food, clothing or toys. For more information, please call the SVdP office.
Loaves and Fishes Soup Kitchen – An ecumenical endeavor to feed the hungry. St. John Parish is responsible for food, its preparation and service every Wednesday. The kitchen is open Wednesdays from 12:00 – 12:45 p.m. at the Ascension Episcopal Church on Court Street in Westminster. Volunteers are needed 9:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
