Sacramental Preparation for Children with Special Needs

At St. John’s, we believe that every child is a beloved creation of God—uniquely made, deeply loved, and fully worthyof receiving His grace through the sacraments. That’s why we created Mosaic: a special needs sacramental preparation ministry designed specifically for families whose children may experience the world differently and for whom traditional sacramental programs, even with accommodations, are not the right fit.

Some families have been made to feel that because their child learns, communicates, or engages differently, they are somehow not eligible for the sacraments. We want to be clear: that is not true.

Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me.” – Matthew 19:14, Mark 10:14, and Luke 18:16 He didn’t say only those who look or learn a certain way. Jesus wants ALL children to come to Him.

 The name Mosaic reflects our belief that every child is a unique piece in God’s design. No two are the same—and together, they form something beautiful and whole. Our differences do not disqualify us from God’s mercy or love. In fact, they help reveal it.

đź’› What Mosaic Offers

Mosaic is a flexible, personalized path to sacramental readiness. It focuses on spiritual formation—not academic performance. It is meant for children who have already been baptized and whose families have been part of St. John parish life for at least one year.

Each family will receive:

  • An at-home kit of tools and resources to explore the sacraments in an age-appropriate and developmentally appropriate way.

  • Regular communication and check-ins from our team.

  • Opportunities for in-person sessions with trained members of our special needs ministry team to troubleshoot challenges, answer questions, and walk alongside your family.

  • A gentle, no-pressure environment—we walk at your child’s pace.

While there is no strict deadline, we ask that families complete the formation process within the current formation year, by June 2026.

🙏 Who Is Mosaic For?

Mosaic is for baptized children whose families:

  • Have been registered and participating in parish life at St. John for at least one year

  • Need a customized approach to prepare for First Reconciliation, First Communion, or Confirmation due to cognitive, developmental, or other special needs

  • Are seeking a loving, affirming path rooted in Catholic teaching, not classroom expectations
